About Me

Back in high school, I had a love-hate relationship with learning, and Chemistry was a class that challenged and motivated me to do a Bachelor of Science majoring in Chemistry at the University of Alberta.

At first, I struggled to keep up with the fast-paced nature of the subject and applying complex concepts to word problems.

I didn’t have a clear study strategy, and it caused me to fall behind and feel anxious about the course.

However, that all changed when I developed a structured study plan, tackling word problems head-on and asking my teacher for help whenever I was stuck. Once I started to see improvement, my confidence soared, and I realized I could succeed.

My efforts paid off when I scored over 90% on my exams, including a 97% on my Chemistry 30 Diploma Exam. The strategies I developed not only helped me in chemistry but also allowed me to excel in other subjects, such as math.

The joy of helping my friends in chemistry class sparked my passion for teaching. I realized how fulfilling it was to guide others, and that desire led me into teaching. I decided to go back to school and do a Bachelor of Secondary Education majoring in Chemistry and minoring in General Science at the University of Alberta. After doing my teaching practicum and working as a substitute teacher, I wanted to help students get better in Chemistry and Math one to one instead of a large classroom setting so I decided to become a tutor.

I believe in listening to my students’ needs and tailoring lessons specifically to their challenges. I work closely with each student, assessing their skills through practice questions, and building their confidence as we move from basic concepts to more complex problems. For example, if a student can solve a simple concentration formula, we’ll progress to word problems where they must understand how to break down the question and apply the concept.

One of my proudest moment as a tutor was working with a student named Priya who came to me struggling in Chemistry 30 after scoring in the 60–70% range in Chemistry 20. She was balancing a packed schedule with her high school volleyball team and found it hard to connect with her teacher’s style, leaving her confused even after class. Her early quizzes hovered around 60%, which was stressful since she was aiming to become a nurse in the future.

We did online sessions using a shared whiteboard where I walked her through step-by-step solutions and then had her try similar problems on her iPad, so I could give feedback in real time. We worked through her class notes, assignments, and even past diploma exams in a test-like setting. As her confidence grew, I began teaching her ahead of the class, which helped her understand new content more easily.

Over time, her scores jumped to the high 80s and 90s on unit tests, she scored 92% on her Chemistry 30 diploma exam, and finished the course with a final grade of 90%. She also got early acceptance to Grant MacEwan Nursing Program as well! accepted early into her dream nursing program. Teaching Priya reminds me why I love what I do—helping students gain confidence, improve their marks, and reach their goals.
