How Chemistry Took Me from Struggling Student to Confident Tutor

When I was in high school, there were subjects I loved, and then…there was chemistry. Chemistry was both challenging and rewarding for me, and it’s a big part of why I love helping students tackle tough subjects today. Finding My Way Through Chemistry

High school chemistry was a rollercoaster. At first, I found it incredibly tough. The pace was faster than I’d ever experienced, and the content was complex. I wasn’t used to applying advanced concepts to word problems, and I didn’t have any solid study strategies. Without a clear plan, I started falling behind, and I’ll admit—I felt pretty anxious about it. The more I worried, the less I wanted to study, which only made things worse.

But there was a turning point. I realized I needed a plan if I wanted to succeed. So, I created a study routine and focused on the areas that challenged me most, like word problems. I broke my study sessions into smaller, manageable tasks and made sure to seek help from my teacher whenever I got stuck. It wasn’t easy, but with regular practice and sticking to my plan, things started to click.

By the end of the semester, my efforts paid off. My confidence skyrocketed when I started scoring over 90% on my exams, and my hard work culminated in a 97% on my Chemistry 30 Diploma Exam. Chemistry had gone from my biggest struggle to one of my proudest achievements. Not only did I feel more confident in chemistry, but I learned strategies that helped me succeed in other subjects too.

Discovering a Love for Teaching

One of the highlights of my journey in chemistry was studying with friends. I realized how much I enjoyed helping others understand tough concepts. It was incredibly rewarding to see them have those “Aha!” moments, and this sense of accomplishment inspired me to start tutoring.

In my tutoring sessions, I keep things personalized. I start by listening to my students and understanding where they need the most support. Then, I design lessons around their needs, starting with the basics and building up to more complex problems. If a student can solve a simple concentration problem, for example, we’ll progress to tackling concentration-related word problems. It’s all about building confidence step-by-step, so they feel ready to take on even the most difficult questions.

A Success Story: From Struggle to Success

One of my favorite success stories is about a student named Tejen. She came to me at the beginning of grade 10, feeling anxious about science. She had struggled in junior high, ending her Science 9 class with around 60%. Knowing she wanted to do well in Science 10 to pursue her dream of attending a top university, she started tutoring sessions with me.

Together, we worked through her challenges, using workbooks, practice questions, and thorough reviews before each test. I focused on helping her identify what each question was asking, building her skills in understanding and applying concepts, and strengthening her problem-solving abilities.

In her first chemistry unit exam, Tejen scored an impressive 88%, a 28% increase from her grade 9 performance! She told me she felt confident going into the exam, a huge contrast to how she’d felt the previous year. Seeing her transform from a nervous student to a confident one was deeply rewarding and reminded me why I love tutoring.
